According to statistics, the number of Chinese operas varies from 368 in the 1950s to 317 in the early 1980s to 267 in 2005, declining steadily. This figure shows the seriousness of the problem. Fortunately, the opera is struggling to get over. Among the first batch of State-level Intangible Cultural Heritage List Announcements Announced by the State Council (see Guo Fa [2006] No. 18 Document), Chaozhou Opera ranks among them. In 2006, the theme for the first cultural heritage day in China (the second Saturday in June) was “Protecting Cultural Heritage and Protecting the Spiritual Homeland.” So what attitude should we adopt and what measures should we take to protect the heritage and enrich the cultural treasures created by Chaozhou, the ancestor of this Chaoshan era?
