基本情况声波测井在美国始于五十年代初,在苏联则在五十年代中期开始使用。我国声波测井的应用,约晚于国外十至十五年。我国第一台声波测井仪的研制,是在1960年开始于原北京石油科学研究院地球物理室。当时叫超声波测井,系单发双收仪器。直至1964年,于胜利油田牛庄测井攻关队研制成功。在这一时期,研制声波测井仪的还有大庆地球物理研究所和西安石油仪器厂。另外,四川石油管理局石油地质研究所与成都电讯工程学院合作,也在进行声波测井仪的研制。研制初期,声系采用软体的橡皮筒隔声。1964年初,测井界老前辈刘永年总工程师随石油代表团赴法考察,看到刻槽的刚体声系,遂移植到国内。此后,我国的声波测井
