Objective To investigate the clinical significance of concurrent chemoradiotherapy with peripheral blood circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in patients with rectal cancer. Methods Thirty patients with rectal cancer admitted to the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University from June 2014 to December 2015 were selected as the observation group and 20 healthy subjects were randomly selected as the control group. The methods of density centrifugation and immunofluorescence were used to detect the circulating tumor cells in peripheral blood. Meanwhile, the clinical features of CTCs before and after concurrent chemoradiotherapy were analyzed. Results CTCs were detected in peripheral blood of rectal cancer patients in 18 cases, the positive rate was 76.2%; CTCs were not detected in the control group, and the positive rate of CTCs was related to the clinical stage and lymph node metastasis, the differences were Statistical significance (all P <0.05). Conclusions CTCs are associated with poor prognosis in patients with rectal cancer, suggesting that patients with rectal cancer have a higher risk of malignancy and a potential risk of metastasis.
