在常规的文学批评中,存在着同资本主义分配形式相似的隐匿生产过程的作用;文学文本不是被视为一种建构,而是当作文本所描述的社会的自然反映或作者主体性的自发流露,其结果便造成作者与读者连成一气的幻觉,从而导致了一种非生产性的文学批评。而新的、生产性的批评实践,它在文学作品中发现的是一种新的可理解的对象:它生产文本。文本是一个不确定的过程,它从单一、单义的阅读中挣脱,变成便于读者生产的、多义的、矛盾的、可改变的,而批评的任务则是确立文本中未说出的东西,并修正文本以生产真正的历史知识。批评不再是一种认识过程而是生产意义的工作,它不再寄生于既定的文本,而要建构自己的对象并生产作品;作者和读者不再表现为主体之间交流过程中对称的两端,而文本也只有从交流模式的僵化状态中解放出来,才能被有效地运用于阅读过程中的生产。
