1. excited,exciting
excite是动词,意为“(使)兴奋;激发,唤起”,其形容词为excited和exciting。但excited表示“兴奋的;激昂的”,指人、物对……感到兴奋,而exciting表示“令人兴奋的;使人激动的”,指人、物本身让人兴奋、激动。例如:
The excited children forgot to take the presents to the party.
孩子们兴奋得忘了把礼物带到聚会上了。
This is an exciting book. 这是一本令人激动的书。
2. allow, let, permit
这三个词都可以表示“允许;许可”,在表示客气的请求时,可互换使用。例如:
Allow/Let/Permit me (to) introduce you to head of our department.
请允许我介绍你认识我们的系主任。
allow表示准许某人去做什么,给予权利去完成某事,含有同意某人的要求,不禁止某种行动的意味;let在表示“允许;让”的意思时,有听任或容许的意味;permit在表示“允许;许可”时,含有赋予某人做什么的权利或同意、准许的意味。例如:
His parents don’t allow him out on Sunday.
他的父母不允许他星期天外出。
Susan lets her hair grow. 苏珊任由头发变长。
Sandy asked me if she could leave but I wouldn’t let her leave.
桑迪问我是否可以走,但我不让她走。
3. instead, instead of
instead是副词,意为“代替”、“顶替”,通常位于句首或句尾,作状语用;instead of是短语介词,意为“代替”、“而不是”,后接名词、代词或v-ing形式。instead of常用来连接两个对等的成分。
Now you are very busy. I’ll clean the window instead.
现在你很忙,我来替你擦窗户。
He’ll go hiking instead of watching TV.
他要去徒步旅行,而不是看电视。
She never studied. Instead she played table tennis all day.
她从不学习,而是整天打乒乓球。
instead of表示“代替;顶替;而不(是)”的意思时,常可和in place of互换使用。
Father goes to work by bike instead of/in place of by bus.
爸爸骑自行车上班,不乘公共汽车。
4. may be, maybe
这组词语都有“可能;也许”的意思,其区别在于:
may be是情态动词may加上动词be构成的,在句中通常用作谓语,后面多跟形容词、名词、代词、介词短语等作表语。例如:
It may be true. 那或许是真的。
It may be in your pockets. 它也许在你的口袋里。
maybe是一个副词,与possibly, perhaps同义,在句中通常作状语,不能作谓语。例如:
Maybe he has lost the way. 他可能迷路了。
5. true, real
这两个词都表示“真的;真正的”,在很多情况下可以互换使用。例如: That is not his real/true name.那不是他的真名。
real表示“真的”,是相对于想象、错觉、幻觉、伪造而言的,表示实际存在的意义,而true常指故事、消息、信息等与实际相符,不是假的、虚伪的。例如:
It’s not a toy gun; it’s the real thing.
它不是一把玩具枪,是一把真枪。
What he said is true. 他说的话是真的。
It’s true that he has come. 他已经来了这是真的。
real的副词是really, true的副词是truly。常见的与true和real的固定搭配有:true friend/love真正的朋友/真爱,a true story一个真实的故事, the true world真实的世界,in real life在现实生活中。
6. think about, think of, think over
(1)think about 意为“想;考虑”,指考虑解决某一问题,“考虑”的宾语可由名词、代词、动名词、疑问词引导的不定式或宾语从句充当。
I’m thinking about a problem. 我正在考虑一个问题。
They are thinking about visiting the museum.
他们正在考虑参观博物馆的事。
Please think about how to tell her the bad news.
考虑一下怎样把这个坏消息告诉她。
She carefully thought about what I said. 她仔细考虑了我说的话。
(2)think of意为“关心”、“思考”、“想起”、“考虑”等。表示“考虑”的含义时,可与think about互换,后接名词、代词、v-ing形式或疑问词引导的从句。
He always thinks of others more than himself.
他总是为别人考虑得多,为自己考虑得少。
Just think of the poor life in those poor countries.
请想一下那些贫穷国家的贫困生活吧。
(3)think over 意为“仔细考虑”,其中over为副词,如宾语为名词,位于over 前后均可,如果是代词,必须置于think与over之间。
You’d better think it over before you do it.
在做这件事之前,你最好先好好考虑一下。
Let’s think over the problem to see who can work it out first.
让我们仔细思考一下这个问题,看看谁能第一个解答出来。
7. million与hundred, thousand
是三个特殊的数词,在用法上有以下几点值得注意:
(1)这几个词前面有具体数词时,后面直接跟名词;如果前面没有具体数词,要先接of再接名词。
Six million trees were planted on these hills.
在这些山上种了6百万棵树木。
Millions of people took part in a parade in the city.
