语言迁移是包含很多因素的复杂过程,目前学界对语言迁移中的一系列问题尚未达成共识,从模因论角度研究母语迁移现象产生的原因可以为语言迁移研究打开一个新的思路。学习者已有的母语模因在二语习得过程中对二语模因是接纳还是排斥对语言迁移的产生至关重要。只有当母语与目标语在某些方面具有相似性,母语模因才会影响二语学习,母语迁移的作用才能体现出来,新的模因与接收者已掌握的知识才会在兼容过程中被接受并保留,但在此过程中由于英汉两种语言的外延和内涵并不能完全对等,中西的文化存在很大差异,为了能存活下来,新模因通过宿主与旧模因结合而成的复合模因体或模因变异体并不能被二语本族语者所理解,语言学习过程出现僵化现象,这时就产生了母语的负迁移。
