Ahmatova (1889-1966) and her friend Pasternak (Taiwan translated Bastenac, 1890-1960) and Mandelstam (1891-1938) were considered by the West as A representative poet in the Soviet Union. When discussing them, Western critics often stress how they were persecuted under the Soviet system and how their art can not be accommodated in the Soviet Union. It seems that the main value of their poetry lies here. Western comments are not necessarily wrong, but merely stressing this point has in fact seriously distorted their true colors. After reading the poems of Akhmatova, translated by Mr. Ulanhan (apart from the long poems collected in this book, she also includes many of her short lyric poems)
