The Fresh Iran

Tehran Resident B: Each “S” of the Haft Sîn is associated witha concept. Haft Sîn items like senjed, a kind of berry, and somaq, an Iranian spice, are seeds that grow from soil and are sacred.
As New Year begins in Iran, presents are exchanged—traditionally cash or gold coins—and those are usually given to the young by elder friends and relatives. The first few days are spent visiting older loved ones. In preparation for the visits, Iranians often refresh their 3)wardrobes.
Tehran Resident C: In spring, nature is 4)revived and trees put on new clothes; that is why people believe they should also renew their clothes. In spring, when people go to visit their loved ones, they would like to appear clean and neat, so they try to be fresh like the New Year.
The traditional herald of the Nowrûz season is named Hâji Fîrûz. Wearing black make-up and a red costume, Hâji Fîrûz sings and dances through the streets with 5)tambourines and 6)trumpets, spreading good cheer and news of the coming New Year.
In a ceremony on Monday, Nowrûz was officially registered in the National 7)Intangible Heritage List to ensure the conservation of the ancient festival.
The Festive Brazil
In Brazil, beauties wearing only 8)sequins and feathers led carnival parades on Sunday to launch the biggest part of Rio’s five-day 9)bash. The city’s top 12 Samba schools mount 80-minute parades at the 10)Samba-drome to impress a panel of judges and be declared this year’s champion. On Tuesday, costumed 11)revelers enjoy the final hours of Carnival at Rio de Janeiro’s annual 12)Gala Gay Ball. Hundreds of people gathered outside the Scala Club to watch the VIP guests arrive on the pink carpet.
Rio de Janeiro Resident: This is the best party ever. No matter which country you live in, Rio de Janeiro’s gay ball at Scala’s is the best.
The Gala Gay Ball has been a tradition at the Scala Club for many years.
The Legendary Hungary
In a more traditional celebration in Hungary, men dressed from head to toe in sheepskin topped with horns and scary masks fill the streets of 13)Mohács. This is the six-day-long festival known as 14)Busójárás.
Mohács Resident: This is the symbolic end of winter and the beginning of spring. We are chasing the winter away; getting ready for the lighter, warmer weather.
Mohács is the only place in Hungary where it’s celebrated. Most Hungarians associate the name Mohács with the 1526 battle in which the Hungarian army suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of the Ottoman Turks. Legend has it that, after the defeat of the Hungarian army, many soldiers and residents of Mohács fled to the island to escape the Turks. They later returned to frighten off the Turks by putting on big coats made of furry sheepskin along with horned wooden masks painted with blood. It’s said the Turks 15)paniced and ran off, scared by the approaching devils. Each year the Busós cross the Danube in rowboats to recreate the legend.
