Alkaline phosphatase (ALP, EC 3.1.3.1) is a membrane-bound metalloenzyme that is a group of isoenzymes encoded by at least four loci. Two major clinically relevant isoenzymes in human serum are bone and hepatic alkaline phosphatase. Bone ALP better reflects total osteoblast activity than total ALP and reflects more accurately bone metabolism in both physiological and pathological conditions.
