京师同文馆是近代中国最早的一所官办西学堂,也是自办的第一个翻译机构。在译书数量和影响上,它仅次于江南制造局附设的译书局。它对近代中外交流,译书风气的形成,翻译人才的培养和译书出版经验的积累都作出了重要的贡献。外文学习始终是京师同文馆教学的中心,而翻译则是其中最重要的内容。清光绪二年(1876)实施的京师同文馆新课程表中,翻译学习和训练占了很大的比重。它分为三个阶段:认字写字、浅解辞句和讲解浅书是外文学习的基础阶段;尝试翻译,从翻译短句到翻译清
The Tongshi Tongwen Hall is the earliest official western school in modern China and also the first translation agency to run it. It is second only to the translation bureau attached to the Jiangnan Bureau of Manufacturing in the number and impact of translations. It has made important contributions to the exchange of modern Chinese and foreign languages, the formation of the style of translation, the cultivation of translators and the accumulation of translation experience.
