Objective To explore the mental health of rural junior high school students and their relationship with parental rearing patterns. Methods A total of 325 sophomore primary schooling students from a rural middle school in the city were investigated using Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) and Parental Rearing Styles (EMBU). Results Male and female SCL-90 scores of all factors were higher than the domestic norm. Correlation analysis showed that each factor of SCL-90 had a significant positive correlation with EMBU’s parental punishment, over-interference of father, rejection of parental denial, etc. Parental warm-feeling was negatively correlated with each factor of SCL-90; Paternal preference was positively correlated with factors such as compulsion, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, hostility, terror and paranoid in SCL-90. Mothers’ preference was significantly related to factors such as interpersonal relationship, depression, hostility, terror and paranoid in SCL-90 Significantly positive correlation. Conclusion The mental health status of rural junior high school students in this city is poor and closely related to parental rearing patterns.
