重量轻是高效整体列车设计的要求之一。美国铁路对轻重量的高效整体列车的设计始于1984年,1986年拟将进入样品车试验阶段。美国铁路协会对整体列车的提议进行了详细的论证,使用计算机模拟方法对各种设想进行了技术上或经济上的估价。有九家铁路公司提出了提议,其中两家提出了涉及煤炭和其它大宗物资运输的整体列车设计,其余几家的提议涉及联合运输问题。目前确定的设计拟削减联合运输运营费的50%,削减大宗散装货物运输费用的35%,这些设计绝大部分是以现有技术的更好组合为基础的。初步估价表明:这些设计确实在净重和自重比上取得了相当大的改进,并且通过把动力均匀地分散到全列车和减少列车冲动等办法,也为改善列车运行状况增添了希望。
Light weight is one of the requirements for efficient overall train design. The design of a light rail-bound, efficient overall train for the U.S. railways began in 1984 and is expected to enter the pilot phase in 1986. The American Railway Association conducted a detailed demonstration of the proposal for a whole train, using computer simulation to technically or economically evaluate various assumptions. Nine railway companies made proposals, two of which proposed a whole train design involving the transport of coal and other bulk goods. The remaining proposals addressed the issue of co-transport. The current design is intended to cut 50% of the combined transport operating costs and cut 35% of the bulk shipping costs, most of which are based on a better combination of available technologies. Preliminary estimates indicate that these designs did achieve substantial improvements in net weight and deadweight ratio and added hope for better train performance by evenly dispersing power throughout the train and reducing train impulses.
