二十年代中期,美国剧坛出现了一种令人惊异的创作现象。一批作家刻意回避都市文明和人口密集地区,把戏剧笔触深入到群山怀抱的边远乡村,描写那里粗犷、朴素的人生,搜寻保持民族刚阳气质和浪漫传说的题材,反映令现代观众耳目一新的边疆故事。这就是被戏剧史家称谓的“乡土戏剧”或“外省戏剧”。它们集中地描写西部、卡罗来纳、佐治亚、肯塔基等山区。其中,以保尔·格林为代表的北卡罗来纳戏剧作家群成就最高。
In the mid-1920s, there was an amazing creative phenomenon in American theater. A group of writers deliberately avoided urban civilization and densely populated areas, penetrating drama strokes into the remote countryside embraced by mountains, portraying rough and simple life there, and searching for the theme of maintaining the nationalist rigid temperament and romance, reflecting the refreshing Border story. This is the “native drama” or “provincial drama” which is called by the theater historians. They focus on the mountains of West, Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky and more. Among them, Northrop Grumman drama writers represented by Paul Green have the highest achievements.
