制造空心零件在经济上是有利的、工艺上是可行的,既能节约金属、又能降低零件的质量。根据零件的受承特性原理可知,用中空式断面代替实心断面,在承受弯曲、扭转或二者兼而有之的负荷下的汽车零件中(如轴、轴类零件、球头销等),将金属从受负荷较低的中心部位移至承受较高负荷的圆周上,可以有效地利用材料的断面强度。制造轴类空心件,在现行的金属压力加工中,楔横轧是最适宜的方法。它用热轧管材或预先冲制的非贯通空腔的毛坯作为原始毛坯。
