The future growth of industrial output in the United States will fundamentally depend on whether or not the nationwide study of computer design and manufacture can yield fruitful results. The Panel notes that while there has been a remarkable and significant increase in the scientific knowledge in this area, the central problem is still an anomalous lack of knowledge in this area. In the past decade, universities have made an important contribution with limited resources. The primary issue in this area is the establishment of a truly top-notch research community through government support for basic research. The panel of experts selected five key research areas that will have a significant impact in this area: 1. Geometry modeling and analysis; 2. Human-machine interfaces in design and manufacturing; 3. Knowledge-based technologies or experts Horizontal technology; 4. information management; 5. manufacturing equipment and computers. The second priority is to plan university education to strengthen the long-term technological advantage of the United States.
