The segregation of boron and the distribution of boron in Mn-Mo-B-RE low-alloy cast steel during homogenization, normalizing and quenching and tempering were investigated. The effects of boron content, rare earth addition and molybdenum content in steel Effect of Alloying Elements on Boron Distribution. Boron has a significant tendency of segregation in the cast steel and is aggravated by the increase of boron content. The homogeneity of the distribution of boron in the cast steel is strongly influenced by the molybdenum segregation after the usual homogenization treatment. Under certain conditions, a boron phase precipitates along a certain crystallographic plane of austenite or forms a large, continuous network of boron phases along grain boundaries, resulting in brittle fracture. Tests have also shown that rare earth elements have a good effect of protecting boron.
