This introductory article is intended for readers unfamiliar with computer networks. Laying a solid foundation for further reading of the technical literature on this topic. The solution here is to start with an ordered list of functions that should be provided by any network when the two end-users are linked together. Then it shows how to naturally lead to the equivalent protocol, which consists of computer network architectures. After discussing several block diagrams of private networks (commercially available) and public networks (public carriers), the layers and header structures of the SNA and DNA architectures and the X.25 interface are briefly described.
