A growing national program that aims to improve non-destructive evaluation from a local process to a thorough science is fostering the emergence of new, valuable non-destructive evaluation techniques. The direct cause of this plan was the crash of F-111A, a General Dynamics unit of the U.S. Air Force in late 1969. The accident was caused by a crack in the wing’s pivot joint; this crack was missed even though extensive use of the nondestructive evaluation techniques available at the time was used to carry out the most stringent tests on the part. This incident highlighted the urgent need to improve nondestructive evaluation techniques and to reform the actual work on aircraft design and manufacturing.
