While the world celebrates Literacy Day, many children in Cambodia are struggling to get basic education. The country is still in the process of recovery after years of civil war and a massive destruction of the education system by the Khmer Rouge regime. Yong Na Vy used to dream of going to school every day, because she couldn't do it in real life. Her parents are farmers in rural Cambodia and she often missed school in order to help her family in the fields. She said: "When I had to skip school, I was unhappy. I wanted to study but I couldn't. When my parents told me to stop going to school for a while, I was very sad." Unfortunately, her story is all too common in Cambodia. Many children in the Southeast Asian kingdom cannot afford to go to school. Those who do, end up with poor-quality schooling in rundown classrooms, where they don't even own a set of textbooks. Santosh Khatri, education programme specialist at UNESCO Phnom Penh, said: "Access has really improved. But those issues related to quality, reading and writing and numeracy, those aspects are the ones that need to be worked on."
