Advances in health, education and disease prevention and treatments are making human life longer. But what you may not know is that some seemingly unimportant things can also influence how long and how well you’ll live. Here is the latest research on longevity (長寿) signs.
Sign 1: Your Mom Had You Young
If she was under age 25, you’re twice as likely to live to 100 as someone born to an older mom. They think that younger moms produce healthier babies.
  Sign 2: You’re a Tea Lover
Both green tea and black tea contain catechins (儿茶酚), something that helps blood vessels (血管) relax and protects your heart. In a study of more than 40,500 Japanese men and women, those who drank five or more cups of green tea every day had the lowest risk of death from heart disease. Other studies about black tea showed similar results. You really need only one or two cups of tea daily to start doing your heart some good. Ready-to-drink tea doesn’t offer the same health effects. “Once water is added to tea leaves, their catechins disappear within a few days,” says a professor. Also, some studies show that adding milk may get rid of tea’s effects, so stick to just lemon or honey.
  Sign 3: You’d Rather Walk
“Fit” people—defined as those who walk for about 30 minutes a day—are more likely to live longer than those who walk less. So take a walk during your lunch hour, do exercise around the field while your kid is at soccer practice—try by hook or by crook to move a little more, every day.
Sign 4: You Have Strong Legs
Lower-body strength translates into good balance, flexibility, and power, which, as you get older, play an important part in reducing your risk of falls and injuries, leading to better health. Now you see, it is necessary to strengthen your lower-body. But the question is: how?
  1. What can we learn about tea?
  A. Green tea contains more catechins than black tea.
  B. One or two cups of tea daily are best for your heart.
  C. Ready-to-drink tea is not as good as newly-made tea.
  D. Adding milk into tea can improve the good effects of tea.
  2. What does the underlined phrase “try by hook or by crook” in Sign 3 probably mean?
  A. Try your best. B. Use some tools.
  C. Choose carefully. D. Work out new ways.
  3. According to the passage, what can affect your longevity?
  a. your mom’s age at your birth
  b. lower-body strength c. medical advances
  d. living habits
  A. a, b, c B. a, c, d
  C. a, b, d D. b, c, d
  4. What is the passage mainly about?
  A. How advanced science helps people live longer.
  B. How women give birth to healthy babies.
  C. Signs that tell you your health condition.
  D. The new discovery of longevity signs.

Itake the position that parents do not owe their children a college education. If they can afford it, they can certainly send them to the best universities. But they must not feel guilty if they can’t. If the children really want to go, they’ll find a way. There are plenty of loans (貸款) and scholarships for the bright and eager ones who can’t afford to pay.
When children grow up and want to get married, their parents do not owe them a down payment on a house. They do not have the duty to look after their grandchildren. If they want to do it, it must be considered a favor, not an obligation.
Do parents owe their children anything? Yes, they owe them a great deal.
One of their obligations is to give their children a personal worth. A child who is always made to feel stupid and unworthy, constantly compared with brighter brothers, sisters, or cousins will become so unsure, so afraid of failing that he (or she) won’t try at all. Of course they should be properly corrected when they do wrong, but it’s often better to let children learn their mistakes by themselves in time. All their parents should do is to trust them, respect them, understand them and give them chances to try and fail. They must learn to stand failure. When criticisms are really needed, they should be balanced with a smile and a kiss. That is the way children learn.
Parents owe their children a set of solid values around which to build their lives. This means teaching them to respect the rights and opinions of others; it means being respectful to elders, to teachers, and to the law. The best way to teach such values is by deed (行为). A child who is lied to will lie. A child who sees no laughter and no love in the home will have difficulty laughing and loving.
No child asks to be born. If you bring a life into the world, you owe the child something.
  5. The author thinks parents ___ .
  A. should take loans for their children to go to college
  B. should support their children after they get married
  C. needn’t make a down payment on a house for their children D. needn’t feel guilty if they can’t send their children to universities
  6. What does the underlined word “obligation” in Paragraph 2 mean?
  A. Duty. B. Promise.
  C. Right. D. Excuse.
  7. What should parents do when children make mistakes according to the author?
  A. Understand them and tell them not to do that again.
  B. Let them learn the mistakes by themselves in time.
  C. Compare them with brighter brothers or sisters.
  D. Correct their mistakes immediately.
  8. What does the author mainly talk about in this passage?
  A. The duties of the parents.
  B. The best way to teach children.
  C. The reason why children feel stupid and unworthy.
  D. The reason why parents owe their children something.

I was never very neat, while my roommate Kate was extremely organized. Each of her objects had its place, but mine always hid somewhere. She even labeled (貼标签) everything. I always looked for everything. Over time, Kate got neater and I got messier. She would push my dirty clothing over, and I would lay my books on her tidy desk. We both got tired of each other.
War broke out one evening. Kate came into the room. Soon, I heard her screaming. “Take your shoes away! Why under my bed!” Deafened, I saw my shoes flying at me. I jumped to my feet and started yelling. She yelled back louder.
The room was filled with anger. We could not have stayed together for a single minute but for a phone call. Kate answered it. From her end of the conversation, I could tell right away her grandma was seriously ill. When she hung up, she quickly crawled (爬) under her covers, sobbing.
Obviously, that was not something she should not go through alone. All of a sudden, a warm feeling of sympathy (同情) rose up in my heart.
Slowly, I collected the pencils, took back the books, made my bed, cleaned the socks and swept the floor, even on her side. I got so into my work that I even didn’t notice Kate had sat up. She was watching, her tears dried and her expression one of disbelief. Then, she reached out her hands to grasp mine. I looked up into her eyes. She smiled at me, “Thanks.”
Kate and I stayed roommates for the rest of the year. We didn’t always agree, but we learned the key to living together: giving in, cleaning up and holding on.
  9. How does the author develop Paragraph 1?
  A. By analyzing causes. B. By showing differences. C. By describing a process. D. By following time order.
  10. What made Kate so angry one evening?
  A. She couldn’t find her books.
  B. She heard the author shouting loud.
  C. She got the news that her grandma was ill.
  D. She saw the author’s shoes under her bed.
  11. The author tidied up the room most probably because ___ .
  A. she hated herself for being so messy
  B. she was scared by Kate’s anger
  C. she was asked by Kate to do so
  D. she wanted to show her care
  12. What can be the best title for the story?
  A. My Friend Kate
  B. Hard Work Pays Off
  C. How to Be Organized
  D. Learning to Be Roommates

In today’s information age, it’s nearly impossible to avoid using social media. According to USA Today, even American universities are increasingly using social media as a learning tool. Their goal is to teach students how to use social media professionally.
Jade Johnson is taking an upper level advertising course at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. For the class, he has had to organize and promote a contest via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, channels that are commonly used by advertising firms.
“A lot of times students prefer not to use certain social media, but are forced to because of the class,” says Jade.
Some students may be reluctant (不情愿) to create an account, but Jade says that it was helpful because social media skills mean better job opportunities in today’s world.
More college classes are appearing that are designed specially to teach students about social media, offering them a different look into something they may use on a daily basis.
Jenna Kapsis, a senior at William Paterson University, was required to post two Tweets on Twitter and one update on Facebook per week in her Digital and Social Media Communication class. The course had a specific Facebook page where students would create discussion groups and post links.
“Some of the topics included social media manners, online marketing and current events,” Kapsis says.
As technology continues to develop, colleges and universities will likely continue to find ways to combine it with their teaching. Whether it’s to create discussion groups, carry out plans, or communicate with students, professors are ensuring that students can see the potential of mastering social media platforms.
  13. What’s the advantage of social media skills according to Jade? A. Improving students’ learning efficiency.
  B. Offering students a different look into things.
  C. Contributing to the possibility of getting good jobs.
  D. Bettering the communication between teachers and students.
  14. What can we infer from the passage?
  A. Most students are reluctant to use social media.
  B. Social media skills are difficult for students to master.
  C. Social media skills have been expanded to some courses.
  D. The learning of social media skills is a heavy burden for students.
  15. What can be applied to combine social media with teaching?
  a. Communicating with students.
  b. Creating discussion groups.
  c. Doing some experiments.
  d. Carrying out plans.
  A. a, b, c B. a, c, d
  C. a, b, d D. b, c, d
  Master Your Deadlines
The struggle begins in high school, sometimes earlier. Deadlines, and lots of them, start to pile up. At college, the pressure sometimes leads to last-minute rush an unsatisfactory work. At work, failing to meet deadlines can easily get you fired.  Here are a few best practices.
●Assign (分配) deadlines to what matters.
If the task isn’t of high importance, don’t set a specific deadline. In this way, you are able to keep it on your radar for a while without feeling pressured.  This will provide just enough pressure to ensure you get it done.
  ●
Set a personal deadline for yourself a day or two before the actual deadline.  If you’re working with a group of people, add in even more time to account for potential follow-ups and the need for approvals.
  ●Keep communicating.
This means letting others know when something is taking longer than expected, when a delivery didn’t come in, when a client is not providing the necessary information, etc. Although it may feel embarrassing to admit that something is not on schedule, being honest is much better for relieving your stress.
  A. Plan for flexible hours.
  B. Finish your project as early as possible.
  C. But if an activity is urgent, set a deadline immediately.
  D. In this way, you don’t have to stay up late and feel stressed.
  E. But handled properly, deadlines can actually improve productivity.
  F. Whenever you feel challenged to finish work on time, communicate.
  G. So if anything takes longer than expected, you can still wrap it up and hand it in on time. 1.                2.                3.                4.                5.
Life on the planet is filled with problems—little problems, big problems or difficult problems—which we all have almost every day. But what  isn’t the problem but the solution. It is hard for most of us to  that.
For example, my cellphone wasn’t working for a couple of days because of the poor cellphone  in my neighborhood. So I was completely  on the landline telephones (固定電话). Unluckily, this time both of my telephone lines went , so I got into a mad panic (恐慌). All I could think of was “What if one of my clients can’t  me?” What if there is a serious  like a fire which is common in our neighborhood and I can’t make a call? So many problems appeared and I gave no  to the solution.
Then I  Autumn Michels, who, at the age of 14, became  after coming through a life-saving brain operation. To everyone’s surprise, she  wonderfully, navigating her to school or somewhere else with her cane (拐杖). Moreover, she still had her  to play the clarinet (单簧管) in her school’s marching band. You can  how many “problems” Autumn had to , but Autumn didn’t give up solving them. With the help of her friend Rachael, a drummer in the band, Autumn’s dream came true . She is now the perfect clarinet player in the marching band.
Stories like this  me that whenever I  a problem, I should turn as quickly as possible to the solution. Once I turned my  squarely to the solution mode, I did settle my phone issue. No problem can’t be solved in the world as long as you think of its solution . And keeping a(n)  mind is a beneficial way for you to think of solutions.

I began to look for work after I finished the school last year. Now several month later, I still didn’t find the job I was interested. Last Sunday morning I received a call from a man calling him Mr Smith. He said to me on the phone, “I hear you did very well in your studies, but I may have a job for you.” When I entered his office, I felt very nervous with my heart beaten fast. How I hoped I would get through the job hunting talk and he will accept me as a lab assistant. But to my surprise, that he said was disappointed. He only needed a model.
