Human thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is produced in the anterior pituitary and is a sensitive indicator of hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis function. TSH is a glycoprotein containing 210 amino acids and sugars accounting for about 15% of the total molecule. It consists of two peptide chains, alpha and beta. The alpha chain, the alpha subunit, 92 amino acids, is identical to the LH and HCG alpha subunits. The alpha subunit gene is located on chromosome 6.
