The transferrin receptor is a glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 190,000 Daltons expressed from the plasma membrane of the cell and functions to regulate cell growth through iron uptake. Many tumors, including lung cancer, present this receptor outside normal limits, suggesting that it is involved in the excessive proliferation of tumor cells. For the immunohistochemical expression of this receptor in lung cancer, and the semi-quantitative analysis of proliferation-associated nuclear antigen (PCNA), the correlation between the antigen and tumor proliferation activity and survival rate was studied. Thirty-two NSCLC patients underwent surgical resection of frozen specimens. After 5 μm sections were fixed with acetone for 10 min, they were rehydrated with phosphate buffered saline. The immunological activity was detected using mouse transferrin monoclonal antibody. Transferrin free
