2003年是合山市经济社会全面、快速、协调发展的一年。这一年合山市国内生产总值、财政收入、固定资产投资、农民人均纯收入分别为91374万元、12698万元、125000万元、1758元,同比增长35.5％、39.3％、193.5％和12.7％,创该市历史新高,增幅排在全区县(市、区)的前列。合山市成立于1982年,是一个依托合山煤矿和合山电厂而建立的工矿城市,目前人口14万多,煤炭生产和火力发电是该市最主要的支柱产业。随着国有大矿的老化和乡镇小煤窑的彻底关闭,曾经辉煌了多年的合山经济在新旧世纪交替之际一下跌入了低谷。面对困难,新一届合山市委、市政府领导班子迎难而上,解放思想,更新观念,在对合山的市情及国内外的发展形势作了深入细致的分析研究后,提出了“工业强市、农业稳市、科教兴市、商贸富市”的发展思路,率领全市人民艰苦奋斗,扎实工作,实现了经济社会双翼齐飞。
