The choice of a millimeter wave (> 35 GHz) radar transmitter is subject to the same factors that affect the choice of other radar transmitters. These factors include peak and average power, pulse width, pulse repetition frequency, stability, bandwidth and tunability. However, implementing millimeter-wave radar transmitters has become a specialized research issue in the millimeter wave band due to the small size of the radio frequency (RF) structure, loss and breakdown of transmission lines, and the limited variety of devices available for this band. This article discusses the choice and implementation of millimeter-wave radar transmitters, with a focus on the choice of available components, the modulator technology, and the interrelationship between the modulator and the RF generator.
