本文在反思20世纪中国古代小说研究之基础上,从“术语与中国小说之特性”、“术语与中国小说之文体”和“术语与20世纪中国小说之研究”三个方面清理术语与中国小说之关系。本文认为从术语的解读角度梳理小说史是中国小说史研究的特殊理路,而20世纪的小说研究以“虚构之叙事散文”的观念来梳理和限定中国古代小说其实不符合中国小说之实际,中国古代小说是一个整体,有其自身的“谱系”和特性,20世纪以来在西方理论视野下的小说研究有明显的不足,而其中最主要的是“重白轻文”和“重传奇轻笔记”。
