Imagine: after waking up every morning you watch the weather forecast and then have your breakfast while reading news or listening to radio. When returning home after a day’s work, you follow the instructions on the TV to make a delicious dinner for yourself. Then you lie on the crouch to watch the latest movie or talk to your relatives or friends through video phones.
Now these comfortable living experiences can be realized with a gentle touch on a screen.
As the Expo is getting heated, this new product “mTouch”, a facility that combines the functions of mobile phones, TVs and computers to provide video phones, online radio, VOD and the other services, is quite popular in Shanghai.

  New Home-based Info Terminal

As the first product launched by China Telecom Shanghai, “mTouch” looks like a netbook. But it weighs only 800g and the thickness is 5 cm. An 8-inch touch screen is installed with which all the operation is carried out.
It combines the advantages of mobile phones, TVs and computers. Compared with the mobile phones, it has a larger screen, making it more comfortable to watch videos. The operation is easier than computers – the touch screen makes everyone know how to use very quickly. It is more mobile than TVs and can be used everywhere.
“mTouch” users can easily enjoy the video calls, online movies, online music, e-book, weather forecast, online dinner reservation provided by China Telecom.
On the screen of “mTouch” is a “weather box”, showing the temperature and weather conditions in the next two days. With a gentle touch on the “news” icon on the screen, you can see pieces of “local news” and “China news”.
Regular calls and video calls can also be realized through “mTouch”. A click of the “dialogue” icon can bring about a virtual dial nearly same to the dials of ordinary phones but a “video call” button. The clear and fluent voice of call can be attributed to the application of broadband. The video call function enables the users to make face-to-face communication. However, the service is only available in Shanghai.
Movie and e-book are the core services of “mTouch”. It can receive a dozen of traditional channels, from CCTV to local channels. According to information from China Telecom Shanghai, people can watch more than 800 movies, TV series and the other videos. All the contents of “mTouch” are supplied by the partners of China Telecom Shanghai. Therefore there are no disputes about copyright and the quality of videos is also guaranteed. It is known that all the movies, music and e-book can be upgraded every month.
The experts think that “mTouch” has very easy applications and practical functions, which can make it stand out among various portable digital facilities. This new product may help the operation based on touch screen to replace the one based on mouse and keyboard.

  Convergence as the
  Breakthrough Point

Though “mTouch” has so many functions, it is still very easy to use. If the users can get China Telecom’s wireless broadband at home, they can enjoy these aforementioned services. This is also the core application of China Telecom’s strategy of the convergence of three screens (of mobile phones, computers and TVs).
Obviously, this product targets these medium-and-high-end home users. China Telecom plans to make use of its customer resources to work out the package services of “mobile terminal and mTouch and Internet”.
It is introduced that a citizen in Shanghai can get a two-year tryout period of “mTouch” by paying the monthly rent of 98 yuan (USD 14.3). They can also buy the device by themselves at the price of 2,000 yuan (USD 292.7) per unit. This method lowers the threshold for the customers to experience the “mTouch” businesses.
The “mTouch” is not only a home-based terminal, but also a breakthrough point of telecom industry’s “3-network convergence”. To develop a device like “mTouch”, the telecom industry’s insiders can converge the content resources with their own advantages to offset the limitations of Internet, cable TV and telecom, provident he customers with seamless and high-quality services.
The concept of “3-network convergence” was put forward several years ago. On January 13, 2010, Chinese premier Wen Jiabao required to promote the development of this project, which failed to witness rapid progress in these years.
Some experts think that the “3-network convergence” can be seen from two different aspects. The physical convergence is hard to be realized because this is related with the interests of different units. Another one – business convergence, is much simpler because it only needs to operate all the businesses in a unified network. Therefore, it is meaningful to realize “3-network convergence” through “the convergence of three screens”. The latter has more advantages: firstly, it enables the users to use one business in different places and increases the availability of the businesses; secondly, the 3G era means more furious competition for the operators so the convergence can help to contest for more customers.

  New Living Style of
  Convergence and Free
  Communication

In order to work with the “3-network convergence” and to improve the home-based information technology, China Telecom put forward the plan of popularizing the 4M broadband in China in 2010 and to increase the network speed of urban broadband users to 20M in the next three or five years.
In Shanghai, China Telecom launched the project of “Metro Optic Network” (MONET), which now has already covered many residential areas in Shanghai. In this year the project will get access to 1.5 million households and will increase the international bandwidth from 180G in 2009 to 280G and the domestic bandwidth to 1.8T from 1T.
As the largest comprehensive information service provider in the world, China Telecom can provide the home-based users with the services of cable phones, personal handset system, mobile phone, broadband, wireless network, IPTV and video supervision. After years’ development, it has already earned a large amount of customers.
According to the experts, China Telecom needs to improve the functions of “mTouch” to increase the confidence of customers. It is necessary to innovate upon the marketing methods to find potential customers and help them form new information consumption habits. If the “convergence of three screens” can see good results, the “3-network convergence” will have a bright future, bringing the Chinese families with new living style of convergence and free communication.
