Chinese travelers are expected to spend 100 billion yuan ($14.5 billion), while on vacation outside the mainland during the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday in late January and early February, according to Ctrip, China’s largest travel services website.
Rising incomes and friendlier visa policies for Chinese passport holders have allowed more people to break away from the tradition of spending the Lunar New Year at home. And a depreciating yuan is unlikely to make a significant dent in travel numbers, the company said in a report last week. Ctrip predicts that about 6 million Chinese will travel outside the country during the seven-day holiday, also known as the Spring Festival, which starts on Jan. 27.
Nearly 5.2 million people traveled abroad during the 2016 Lunar New Year, a 10% increase from a year earlier, according to the latest data available on the website of the China National Tourism Administration. A research group under the government’s tourism agency and Ctrip together estimated Chinese travelers had spent 90 billion yuan, while on trips abroad during the 2016 Lunar New Year.

Spending the traditional holiday overseas remains a popular option for the country’s growing middle class despite the recent slide in the value of the yuan, which makes overseas travel more expensive. The People’s Bank of China set the central parity rate of the yuan at 6.9508 per dollar on Friday, the lowest value since May 2008. But most travelers won’t cancel arrangements because they "only travel overseas once or twice a year and usually made travel plans two months in advance," the company said.
Thailand, Japan and the U.S. are so far the most popular planned destinations for Chinese travelers for the 2017 Spring Festival, according to bookings made on Ctrip, the company said. While the cost of traveling to countries such as Thailand, the U.S. and the Philippines for the 2017 Spring Festival are expected to increase 3% to 15% from the same period last year, a host of other destinations vying to attract Chinese travelers have relaxed visa rules and increased the number of international flights, pushing down costs, according to the report. These destinations include South Korea, Singapore, Italy and Turkey.
Although China has become the top source of international outbound travelers with 120 million people visiting foreign countries in 2015, the potential of the market is still big, as less than 10% of the population have passports, Ctrip said.In November, President Xi Jinping said during the APEC CEO Summit in Peru that Chinese tourists will make a total of 700 million overseas trips in the next five years. Thailand, Japan and the U.S. among most popular destinations
Some 6 million Chinese are expected to travel abroad during the upcoming Spring Festival holidays, a record high for a weeklong holiday, according to a report by the online travel agency Ctrip.
"China’s Spring Festival holidays from January 27 to February 2 will be a global Golden Week, with an estimated 6 million Chinese traveling overseas," the company said a report. The 10 most popular destinations include Thailand, Japan, Singapore and South Korea. South Korea fell to seventh from third in 2015, according to the report.
Given the unstable political situation in South Korea and the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense(THAAD) anti-missile system, Chinese enthusiasm for that country has cooled, Zhang Lingyun, director of the Tourism Development Academy at Beijing Union University said. However, the number of Chinese traveling to Southeast Asian countries, especially the Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia, is on the rise mainly due to low costs and geographical advantage, he said.
Besides, bookings for farther destinations have peaked, with the U.S. and Australia as the most popular, according to the report. For example, U.S. travel packages for NBA games, outlet shopping or visits to Hawaii are popular. Although it costs more to travel during the peak season, prices are about the same as they were last year, the report noted. That’s due to an increase in the number of flights, advanced purchase of travel packages and travel agency discounts.
The cost of traveling to Thailand, the U.S. and the Philippines is 5 to 15 percent higher than last year. However, it’s cheaper to travel to South Korea, Singapore and Italy, down 10-30 percent from the previous year, said the report. This is mainly the result of market adjustments, according to Zhang. "Prices remain a major factor for tourists. Besides South Korea, packages to Japan and Taiwan may also be reduced," he explained.
Easier visa application requirements, more flights and lower prices have induced overseas travel, according to the report. The number of Chinese booking for trips overseas is about four times higher than for domestic travel, data from Ctrip shows.
A Beijing resident surnamed Xie said on Wednesday that he plans to visit Japan with his parents during the coming holidays. "Though it costs much higher than the low season, the Spring Festival holidays is a valuable time for our family to get together," he said.

“More favorable visa policies toward Chinese will be implemented by the end of the year. " After the U.S., Canada and Singapore granted 10-year visas to Chinese, Israel and Australia followed suit. In addition, Thailand reduced its visa fees for Chinese visitors in December, January and February," a travel agent surnamed Chen at domestic online travel agency lümama.com, said in a statement.
The National Development and Reform Commission and National Tourism Administration issued a joint statement Wednesday to implement key travel and leisure projects, actively guide social capital into the tourism industry, continuously improve infrastructure and the public service system and enhance travel packages and services to embrace the coming era of mass tourism and leisure.
The aim is to boost travel consumption to 7 trillion yuan by 2020, contributing more than 10 percent to national economic growth, said the statement posted on their websites.
Southeast Asian countries have become especially favored by Chinese tourists due to low costs and geographical proximity, while easier visa application requirements and increased number of flights have increased the overall popularity of overseas travel.

An agent named Chen from online travel agency Lulumama said: "After the US, Canada and Singapore granted 10-year visas to Chinese, Israel and Australia followed suit. In addition, Thailand reduced its visa fees for Chinese visitors in December, January and February."
In anticipation of the surge in overseas travel, Chinese airlines like China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines have begun operating new international routes this season, with the latter operating the first-ever direct flight from the Chinese mainland to Las Vegas. Meanwhile, domestic travel is also expected to be very heavy this coming CNY. Some 356 million railway trips will be taken during the annual chunyun travel rush, an increase of almost 10% from last year. At present, customers are only allowed to purchase a maximum of five tickets at a time.
Here’s the full top 10 list of the most popular destinations among outgoing Chinese tourists for Spring Festival 2017:
  1) Thailand
  2) Japan
  3) US
  4) Singapore
  5) Australia
  6) Malaysia
  7) South Korea
  8) India
  9) The Philippines
  10) Vietnam
Last year, some 2.91 billion journeys were taken during the Chinese New Year holiday in what was the largest migration of humans to date.
