由于湖北电力系统目前存在着供电与用电、火电用煤与煤炭供应矛盾,随着负荷的发展和电力结构变化,负荷峰谷越来越大,根据系统特点及调峰要求,兴建隔河岩大型水电站是必要而有利的。从电力系统调峰、配合葛洲坝水电站运行、发电量、与已建大型水电站比较、电力系统经济效益等方面分析,隔河岩水电站装机容量120万kW是经济合理的。
