China’s retail industry is growing at a rate of 6,400 yuan per year. The increase is equivalent to the GDP of Argentina as a whole. In spite of this, the competition is still fierce, and most of the retail model profits are slim. Of the top 20 chain retailers in the world, only seven have branches in China. Other companies are still stagnating, because on the one hand, they are skeptical about whether they can get a reasonable return; on the other hand, Chinese law requires them to cooperate with local companies, and these restrictions were cancelled in December 2004.
