The primary task facing the U.S. railways is to increase the utilization rate of trucks. The reason for this is that investment in trucks is large and the expenses for updating and modernization are on the rise. The changes in the number of trucks used by the U.S. railways from 1966 to 1975 are shown in Table 1. As can be seen from the table, the total number of trucks used in the period 1966-1973 has been declining due to the increase of large-tonnage specialized trucks and the scrapping of a large number of used cars.
