During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the female readers’ comments on the drama sometimes appeared. However, due to the influence of the traditional women’s life style, these comments spread only among the boudoir and hardly enter the public view. From late Ming to early Qing Dynasty, women’s comments on “The Peony Pavilion” and other operas only circulated among family members and relatives, which belonged to a minority audience. In the early Qing Dynasty, with the publication of female literature and the emergence of professional female writers, female opera commentary began to be disseminated in the form of mass publication, while the publication of ordinal comment made the female drama reading experience from the intimate boudoir to the broad public domain.
