In the central western Pacific there is a Republic of the Marshall Islands, consisting of 29 atoll and 5 small islands. The country has a land area of only 180 square kilometers and a population of only 54,000. From 1944 to 1947, it was administered by the United States and was entrusted by the United States since July 1947. In 1986, it was partially independent (the security was under the control of the United States). In December 1990, it formally ended its trusteeship. From 1946 to 1958, the United States conducted 66 atomic and hydrogen bomb explosions at Marshall’s Bikini and Eniwetok Atoll. Radioactive dust from nuclear explosions polluted the nearby islands. Fifty years have passed since these reefs are still not suitable for human habitation because of radioactive contamination. The original residents were waiting for Americans to clean up the nuclear contamination they left behind.
