In high school physics, there is an experiment of “determining the acceleration of a uniform linear motion”. In the experimental data processing of tapes recorded by the dotting timer, there are usually two methods for calculating the acceleration, that is, the neighboring method and the subtraction method. The pros and cons of these two methods have been discussed in many publications. Some think that the error of the neighboring method is small and the calculation is simple; while others believe that the method of trial and error makes full use of experimental data and can reduce the error. The author thinks these views are all partial. In this paper, we first explain the two methods by analyzing the neighboring method and the subtraction method.
