Arthur Welly is one of Britain’s most prominent sinologists of the twentieth century. His English translations have made Chinese classical poetry enter the field of Western readership and have had a tremendous impact on Western sinology. By objectively describing the background of the English translation of Willishan’s poems, this paper aims to clarify the unique ideas of Willie’s translations of scholars, translators and poets. It mainly analyzes the three elements of poetry translation (poem taste, rhythm, Imagery), the selection of the theme of English poetry translation, and the requirements for the quality of translators to examine three aspects, and analyze the translation of ideas and translation purposes and the relationship between the mainstream of poetry. Finally, the thesis examines the outstanding contributions made by Welley’s translation of Chinese poems into Chinese and Western cultural exchanges and finds out the inspiration of Welley’s translation of Chinese poems into the English translation of Chinese classical poems from the perspectives of subject culture and translation.
