Pitney Bowes, the big company that runs the postage pricing business, started the secure file transfer business in preparation for a bid for the market from United Parcel Service. To that end, the company has registered a patent for the online postage meter. Pitney is licensing its computer-based postage pricing patents to sellers of digital postal services. Pitney’s effort is to develop a rapidly growing digital postage pricing market, and companies expect to rely on the need to download stamps for postal purposes. For many years Pitney has been working on the development of computer-based metrology. “Many of our metrology-related patent applications started in the 1980s,” said Melvin Scolnich, Pitney Bower’s standing legal counsel, in a statement. “These early patents were really just a few of the many important patent documents that subsequently succeeded in PC postage-related technology.” For Pitney, the new patent it owes more to its determination to deliver Internet-based Internet delivery services . At the same time UPS company announced in March 1998 UPS Document Exchangew this product. But both Pitney and UPS are using Posta technology from Tumbleweed Software. Jeffery, president of Tumbleweed
