Both teratocarcinomas are valuable experimental systems in terms of general understanding of differentiation and understanding of malignant growth. Embryonic cancer cells (EC cells) are pluripotent stem cells of teratocarcinoma, and their in vitro cultured cell lines can be induced to differentiate by some substance. The cellular aggregates of embryonic carcinoma cell line P19 can be induced to differentiate by retinoic acid (R A) or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). We also isolated mutant clones that were not induced by RA or DMSO to further investigate the nature of the developmental processes induced by these two substances. This article examines whether these mutations are evidence of the existence of extracellular signals. Experimental Design According to Rosenst-
