THE ROCKING-HORSE WINNER is one of Lawrence’s famous short stories, and is an essay on the selection of literary textbooks by British and American universities. The novel portrays a young man who, in order to pray for good luck so that he can have more money in his home, miraculously reaps inspiration from riding a horse and uses it to gamble at the racecourse. Eventually, though he has won the money, he has lost his life . This story may seem strange and unreal, but it tells readers that it is for “more money” that it drives an adult teenager onto the path of superstition and gambling. In the end, with money, he lost his life. This subtle satirical morality, how can it not cause for thought?
