Physiochemically induced mutagenesis of several leguminous crops has been carried out for a considerable period of time and many beneficial mutants have been bred. Originated in tropical genus Bean, there are a variety of legumes available for consumption, is an important and economical source of protein nutrition. In the case of Genus, Center and Brown (1941) studied the effects of alpha-rays (2160, 6500, 13000, and 26,000 Roentgen) on dormant germinating seeds. They used the number of seeds that did not germinate, the number of dead seedlings within 19 days after planting and the degree of inhibition of plant growth and development as the standard of measurement. It was observed that the contemporary radiation effects were different depending on the treatment dose and the pre-treatment germination period.
