US Science Digest, June 1982 Report: A hospital in South Africa uses oxygen to treat cancer. The ability of cancer cells to repair their genetic damage by radiation therapy depends on the level of oxygen in the cancer cells. The hypoxic tumor cells are minimally damaged by radiation and can survive; on the contrary, if the oxygen content is high, chemical reactions in the DNA of the cancer cells cause irreversible DNA damage. Radiotherapy expert Ross Sealy said that if high pressure oxygen is given during radiotherapy, it seems to enhance the effect of radiation destroying certain tumor cells. The Grote Schul hospital in Cape Town places the patient in a 7-foot-long plastic drum under a radiation transmitter and then fills the barrel with oxygen, which doubles the pressure in the barrel and forces the cancer cells to get oxygen.
