This paper presents an overview of the concepts of elastic fluid dynamic pressure (EHR) lubrication and presents various simplified equations to determine the oil film thickness between the meshing teeth. By using a combination of lubricant parameters (PL) with a combination of viscosity and pressure-viscosity characteristics, a suitable lubricant can be selected to prevent possible damage to the gears at all levels. In this paper, an optical inspection technique is described in which the lubricant parameters can be precisely determined by directly measuring the thickness of the oil film in the contact of the spring. The relative merits of using optical methods to observe mineral oil, synthetic oil and VI-modified oil under the condition of spring current are discussed.
