The goal of using large batteries to store power for power companies or users with large power consumption seems to be achievable. The world’s largest battery energy storage system was put into use at the Edison substation in Southern California in June 1988 in Chenonau, California. It will provide users with electricity during peak periods. The lead/acid battery used in this system was supplied by Exeter with a capacity of 10 megawatts. The Southern California Edison substation cost US$10 million for this project, and the Electric Power Research Institute also provided US$3.5 million in funding. The Institute of Electric Power now provides US$2.5 million each year in research and development for storage batteries.
