Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT) often occurs in patients who live in regions with inadequate iodine intake, and hypothyroidism is more common when iodine intake is normal in the environment. It is generally believed that AIT is caused by the iodine deficiency of amiodarone to release iodine, which leads to overproduction and release of thyroid hormone. This is the case in patients with nodular autonomic thyroid and Graves’ disease who have normal thyroid function. In recent years, it was suggested that AIT may be due to an inflammatory process in the thyroid gland, resulting in the release of excess thyroid hormone into the circulatory system.
