中国是以中原汉族为核心、以农业文明为基础建构起来的国家,农耕特色和儒家伦理秩序的结合,形成中国特有的历史文明,赛珍珠的《大地》三部曲描绘了中国人与土地的关系,虽然这部作品颇受争议,但是赛珍珠牢牢把握住了几千年农业文明和封建文化整合而成的中国人的传统生存状态,她以“土地”为媒介描写中国,目的就是要将真正的中国介绍到西方。
