Kai-Fu Lee is one of the most successful of Chinese professional managers. He worked for big companies such as Apple, Microsoft and Google. Now he has left Google and works for himself. Behind each of his choices is his belief that you should “lead your life”, rather than “live your life”.
He made his first big life decision in 1990. He was then the youngest associate professor of Carnegie Mellon University. If he had stayed there for another few years, he would have become a tenured (终身职位的) professor. But he decided to join Apple. He wanted to change the world using hi-tech, not write papers all his life.
At apple, he actually did change the world. His team were at the forefront of many hi-tech miracles (奇迹), such as the iPod and the iPhone.
In 1998, he joined Microsoft and decided to go to China to start up Microsoft Research China. Many people thought the research and living conditions in China were poor. They were worried that Lee’s decision would ruin his career. But the lab, now called Microsoft Research Asia, is one of the best in the world.
In 2005, he moved on again, to Google. In his four years there, Google’s market share in China jumped from 16 percent to 30 percent.
Now he has taken the bold step of starting his own company. He has said his aim is to help China’s young people start up their own businesses.
The company, called Innovation Works, claims to be a platform for new Chinese companies in mobile computing and e-commerce. Young people can send their business ideas to the company. If Lee likes an idea he receives, the company will provide funding to help turn the idea into a business.
Lee has written several books. His Be Your Personal Best, is a bestseller. On September 15, his first autobiography, Making a World of difference: the Kai-Fu Lee story, was published. The book sells the story of Lee’s many successes but also setbacks on the way to becoming a technology and business again.

Looking into future
At UN headquarters in New York, half of the world’s leaders are meeting in the general assembly(大会). But outside the building, aircraft carriers are busy evacuating (撤离) thousands after flooding. A hurricane has hit the city.
Fortunately, this is not a real news report. It is an imaginary diary entry written by a future US president.
This diary is part of Global Trends 2025, a report that forecasts a world marked by environmental disasters, decreasing US power and fewer resources. It was written by the US National Intelligence Council (NIC,全国情报委员会) ahead of President-elect Barack Obama’s taking office on January 20, 2008.
The NIC, an independent government body, publishes its vision into the future every four years. The last report came in December 2004 when President George W. Bush had just been re-elected and was preparing his triumphant(胜利的)second term. Named Mapping the Global Future, the 2004 report looked forward as far as 2020 when it projected continued US dominance(统治)under which most major powers have dropped the idea of balancing the US. However, that confidence is entirely lacking from the far more sober (冷静的) article this year.
US dominance
The US will remain the single most important actor in 2025, but it can no longer call the shots alone. It will keep its considerable military advantages, but its scientific and technological advances will slow. US policy is likely to be strongly determined by developments in a number of key states, particularly China and Russia.
West vs East
Global wealth and economic power will shift from West to East. Brazil, Russia, India and China are picked as countries, which could benefit. Rising oil and goods prices will make large profits for the Gulf states and Russia. A shift in manufacturing (加工) and service industries to Asia will make China and India rich.
The EU is possible to be “ losing clout (集团)” by 2025. Internal (内部的) differences will make it hard for the union to translate its economic clout into global influence.
China’s rising
China is in position to have more impact on the world over the next two decades than any other country. If current trends go on, by 2025 China will have the world’s second largest economy, and its military will play an important role.
Technology
The transition (转变) from old fuels to new will be slow, as will the development of new technologies that help fix food and water problems. It is most likely that technology will fall behind the running out of oil and gas reserves (储存).
1. The first paragraph serves to ________.
A. warn us environmental disasters got out of control
B. present us an imaginary scene in the future.
C. ive us a description of a science-fiction film
D. Show us what the US president has to worry about
2. The difference of the two reports by the NIC lies in that________ .
A. the US continues to be the single most important player in the world
B. the world will unite to battle environmental disasters
C. the US will keep its economic and technology edges
D. the US will be under a greater influence by certain major powers
3. Which of the following is NOT a key trend in the report by the NIC?
A. No other country will have as strong a military as the US
B. Brazil, Russia, India and China will be gaining wealth and economic power.
C. All the members of Brazil, Russia, India and China could benefit from rising oil and goods prices.
D. Alternative energy technologies may not catch up with the speed of the present use of energy.
