汉字是由表义字符和表音字符构成的,包括表意字、表音字、意音字的单音节语词文字。汉字一字一音节的特点是由古汉语单音词的特点所决定的。由表义的形符和表音的声符构成的形声系统,是汉字和汉语的特点共同作用的结果。汉字和汉语在发展过程中相互适应、相互作用:汉字的表意特点对区分汉语的同音词有重要作用,汉语的双音化和词的复合化限制了汉字字数的无限增长,使得汉字处在可以掌握的数量范围。汉字按音节分写的模式是自古形成的,不会随着汉语词音节模式的改变而自动改变,使得汉字成为世界上少有的不按词书写的现行文字。这也使得汉语拼音的功能不能与汉字完全对等,无法轻易取代汉字。
