The United States Conrail Railroad successfully tested a self-unloading train at two power plants at the Pennsylvania Power Company in the summer of 1986. The dump coal train was designed and manufactured by Georgetown George Town, Texas to transport sand and gravel as a dump truck to compete with trucking in short-haul lines less than 35 or 40 miles. The train’s capacity is 700-900 tons of coal, equivalent to 30 truckloads. The 1986 summer experiment was to deliver local coal in Pennsylvania to the Seward Power Plant and the Connery Power Plant of the Pennsylvania Electric Power Company. Further tests this winter will determine whether the train can be used normally.
