《红字》是霍桑的代表作品,作家通过细腻的笔触向读者揭示了加尔文教统治之下的婚姻、法律、道德的野蛮与残酷。霍桑一方面对加尔文教持有反抗态度,但另一方面却又受到了这种宗教传统的束缚。目前学界对霍桑的研究主要集中在对其象征主义手法以及对作品中宗教思想的研究,对其作品中哥特风格的研究甚少。文章就以此为切入点,从霍桑与哥特风格、哥特人物与场景、对传统哥特风格的突破三方面,分析霍桑《红字》的哥特风格。
The “Scarlet Letter” is the representative work of Hawthorne. Through his delicate brushwork, the writer reveals to the readers the brutality and cruelty of marriage, law and morality under the Calvinism. Hawthorne on the one hand, resistance to Calvinism on the one hand, but on the other hand was subjected to this religious traditions. At present, the study of Hawthorne in the academic circles mainly focuses on his symbolism and the study of religious thought in his works, and his studies on the Gothic style are scarce. Based on this, the article analyzes the Gothic style of Hawthorne’s “Scarlet Letter” from three aspects: the Hawthorne and the Gothic style, the Gothic characters and the scene, and the traditional Gothic style breakthrough.
