This essay argues from the perspective of etymology and historical development that the word “China” in English originated from the “Qin” of the Qin Dynasty in the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC), not from the Qin Dynasty 6 years) of “Qin.” “Qin” first entered Persian into Chin, and then into Sanskrit through Persian Cina and Chinasthana, and finally into Sanskrit into English to become China. The word Cathay in English is the transliteration of Khitan, the country name of the Khitan country (Liao) in the north of our country from the 10th to the 13th centuries, entering English through Arabic.
