Approved by the former Department of Foreign Affairs of General Administration of Press and Publication, China Children Press & Publication Group has, for the first time, participated in Bologna International Children's Book Fair on its own. The exhibition stand of it was in Number 26 Exhibition Hall, where there were other stands of many well-recognized European and American publishers. The Vice President of China Writers Association Gao Hongbo and the famous children’s literature writer Cao Wenxuan have also been present at the book fair and attended two high-end talks with the President of International Board on Books for Yonng People(IBBY), President of Judging Panel of Hans Christian Andersen Award and international outastanding writers and illustrators. Through this book fair, China Children Press & Publication Group has increasingly showed its own ability in making original products and communicating with the world.
Bologna International Children's Book Fair is held at the beginning of April every year. It is a large-scale book fair with a long history, and is known as one of “the world’s two largest book fairs” together with Frankfurt Book Fair. In 1990, China joined IBBY, and later in 1994, Publishers Association of China established China Children Books Publishing Committee. Since 1998, Children Books Working Committee and China Board on Books for Young People CBBY of IBBY have co-participated in Bologna International Children's Book Fair. And in 2013, the 50th anniversary of Bologna International Children's Book Fair, both China Juvenile & Children's Books Publishing House and China Children Press & Publication Group were present at the book fair.
Li Xueqian, President of China Children Press & Publication Group said their independent participation in book fair was an inevitable result of the development of China Children Press & Publication Group in different aspects these years: The first aspect lies in the development of its economic strength. In 2012, its output value (including books, newspapers, digital products and derivatives) reached RMB 8,710,000 in total, among which the sales income was RMB 400,000,000 and the profits surpassed RMB 50,000,000.00. The second aspect lies in the development of its creative ability. Stepping up efforts in original works publishing in 2009, it has published over 900 categories of original children’s readings on children literature, children enlightening and history so far. Its accumulation of original publication resources, copyrights and increasing brand influence create the opportunity of doing international copyright trade for it altogether. The third aspect lies in the openness of its development. “We have been participating in various book fairs and closely cooperating with foreign publishers these years. We learn from them and recommend some of our original works while introducing the copyrights of their products. They show an increasing interest and have introduced some of our works now. In addition, we have cultivated a number of talents who are able to do international copyright trade and developed some new channels during the whole process”, said Li Xueqian. The open development of China Children Press & Publication Group made him feel that it was the time for participating in the international book fairs on their own.
It is reported that the exhibition stands of China used to be in Number 29 Exhibition Hall where there are mainly the publishers of Asian and Pacific regions. This year, China Children Press & Publication Group has booked a stand of 96 square meters in Number 26 Exhibition Hall, where there are mainly publishers of European and American regions. The exhibition of this year also generated a high cost, which surpassed RMB 1,000,000.00 according to the leaders in charge of it.
China Children Press & Publication Group Holds Activities and Signs Book Agreements at Bologna Children's Book Fair
“Tell good stories together - Dialogue between Chinese and foreign children's literature writers and illustrators & signing activity” was held at the stand of China Children Press & Publication Group in Number 26 Exhibition Hall (Euramerican Exhibition Hall) of Bologna International Exhibition Centre in March 2013. Publishers all over the world had attended the activity. Cao Wenxuan, a famous Chinese academic-type writer of Children's literature, who is also the winner of Nomination of Hans Christian Andersen Award, introduced his latest work – Feather - A small and light piece of feather is helplessly swinging in the wind and he keeps asking different kinds of birds that it meets the same question: “Am I yours?” and initiates a series of cold or warm stories and even generates a sense of adventure. The philosophic thinking and grief of human to look for self belongingness contained in the story moved over 40 publisher representatives from over 20 countries throughout the world on the spot.
The illustrator of Feather, Mr. Roger Mirro is from Brazil, and he has achieved the Nomination of Hans Christian Andersen Award for several times. In his opinion, Feather of Cao Wenxuan is a story which is concise in language, open in structure and full of sense of philosophy. He likes the story very much and hopes that his illustrations can be as concise and graceful as the story itself. During the activity, he showed his entire design and part of drawings of the book to the audience. Li Xueqian, President of China Children Press & Publication Group indicated that the story appealed to him a lot. He felt that the feather is alive, and it is both weak and strong. On one hand, it has no choice but to swing with the wind; on the other hand, it persists in finding out where it is from. He said that Cao Wenxuan not only has outstanding artistic expression as a writer, but also has profound understanding of philosophy as a scholar.
Mr. Laize Karuddin, President of IBBY believes that China’s children will be able to read the works created by Chinese writer and illustrated by Brazilian illustrator. It is a good thing for Chinese government to help and support publishers in carrying out the activity of “telling good stories together”. Mr. Karuddin, from Malaysia, thinks that Asia only accounts for a very small market share in international copyright trade and he hopes China, a s major country of Asia, can serve as a leader to improve the international awareness of Asian children's literature and children's publications.
Miss Maria Jesus Kiel, President of Judging Panel of Hans Christian Andersen Award said that it was the first time to have the opportunity to communicate with Chinese writers face to face. She enjoyed the talk with Cao Wenxuan and Roger Mirro on Feather, and she felt that the stand of China Children Press & Publication Group was warm and special, and the dialogue between Chinese and foreign children’s writers was a very creative activity, which increased her interest in understanding the development trend of Chinese children’s literature and status quo of the publishing of Chinese children’s books. The winners of Frankfurt Book Fair and other international awards are mainly from European and American countries so far, and if there are more stages like that of today to display children’s literature and children’s publications of China to the world and offer more opportunities for people from other countries to ‘read’ China, the international influence of children's literature and publications of China will be expanded to a large extent.
Mr. Gao Hongbo, Vice President of China Writers Association attended Bologna Children's Book Fair for the first time. He indicated that the stand of China Children Press & Publication Group was very impressive and the 110 original Chinese picture books published by China Children Press & Publication Group previously included almost all the first-class domestic children’s literature writers and illustrators, which is a set of original picture books standing for the largest scale and highest level of China. Meanwhile, he considered that it was a demonstration of self-confidence and courage for China Children Press & Publication Group to exhibit in the competitive Euramerican Exhibition Hall and hold the activity of "telling good stories together", which provides a good chance for other countries to learn about the children's publishing of China and help improve the international awareness of it. After the book fair, President Li Xueqian signed a contract with Mr. Cao Wenxuan and Mr. Roger Mirro on the publishing of Feather. A number of foreign publishers participating in the activity were very interested in Feather and some other original picture books displayed by China Children Press & Publication Group in the exhibition. They hope to improve communication and look forward to the cooperation with China Children Press & Publication Group in the near future. It is reported that China Children Press & Publication Group has spawned many cooperation opportunities between Chinese writers and outstanding painter in the world till now, which include the illustration of Zhang Ange, the Chinese Canadian illustrator for Grandma Living in Xiangshui Village by Fang Suzhen, the illustration of Joshua Carpenter, the American illustrator for Hanging Sun by Mr. Bai Bing and so forth. President Li Xueqian has also signed an agreement with Anna Tania, the famous Russian illustrator on the illustration cooperation of Across the River by Xue Tao and over 20 contracts with Karuddin, the CEO of Malaysia Xidike Publishing Company on the copyright export of “Little Pig Bobofei” series books by Gao Hongbo and How to Teach Elephants Dance by Xiao Bao. By the last day of the book fair, China Children Press & Publication Group has signed 46 contracts with five countries including UK, South Korea, Malaysia and Vietnam on copyright export project. Additionally, it has reached copyright export intention with Australia, France and other countries and regions.
Among these agreements on copyright output, the one on “Little Pig Bobofei” is most outstanding. Miss Pazzi Adamna, the former Chairman of IBBY likes Little Pig Bobofei very much. She thinks that this is a story centering on children without rigid moralism. Little Pig Bobofei is not a traditional lambkin; he is clever, lovely and minded and self grows in his life. Adamna feels happy that China Children Press & Publication Group has found out and published such excellent painting book and she believes that China Children Press & Publication Group will do a better job on this series.
Mr. Gao Hongbo, Vice President of China Writers Association feels special when listening to the stories of Little Pig Bobofei by Adamna in English. Though not understanding English that much, he fully understands the story through Adamna’s telling. As asked for the reason, he explained that happiness does not need translation. He believes that the problems met by little pig in the story are possible problems of children in their own life. He also mentioned that the writing process of this story was quite pleasant, just like the sunshine in Italy. The little pig in the story is optimistic and happy, just like Mr. Gao himself. President of China Children Press & Publication Group believes it is a very good work from its story to illustration. He has confidence in its external promotion as the publishing profit of it has exceeded RMB 50,000,000.00 in China last year and it also has good distribution channels. He hopes that it could be recommended to more children in the world. Cao Wenxuan, famous writer for Children's Literature and professor of Beijing University considered that the works of Mr. Gao Hongbo share a similarity - purity. It is represented by the story, language and thought of his works and such purity is exactly one of the qualities needed by the picture story books. In addition, the works of Mr. Gao are full of wisdom within lines and wisdom is right another quality needed by the picture story books.
Translation is an inevitable problem in the process of the external promotion of Chinese Literature. The original languages of “Litter Pig Bobofei” series possess a touch of rhythmical beauty like poetry which creates challenges for the translation, while the English version of “Litter Pig Bobofei” series is a successful practice as it realized this rhythmical conversion skillfully. The president China Children Press & Publication Group Li Xueqian introduces their standard of selecting translators: they will choose the Chinese literature lovers who have a good feeling of writing and have been living in an English-speaking country for years. They will also invite some experienced publishers for the proof-reading of the translation in order to ensure the quality of translation and make it conform to the reading habits of western readers. Ms. Adamna has once translated for "Little Pig Bobofei" series and suggested changing the book name Bobofei into Joey, a very common name in English-speaking countries. She said it’s different in western countries that people usually won't get a funny name for protagonist to attract children like it is in China. On the contrary, they prefer using a common name so that every child can image that they are the protagonist and enjoy the happiness of stories.
Ms. Adamna mentioned that the publications were mainly from English-speaking countries in the past, and the literature of other languages was less known. She considered the participation of China Children Press & Publication Group in this year’s Bologna Children’s Book Fair which helped it import many international publishing resources had received very good results. She also hopes that China Children Press & Publication Group can attend more international book fairs and bring more excellent writers and works of China to the international stage so that people in other countries can have a chance to learn about the children's literature. She indicated that China has a large market of children’s book and a group of excellent writers. The children’s literature of China should play a more important role in the development of children’s literature of the world with the support of powerful publishers like China Children Press & Publication Group. There are over 300,000,000 children in China, which offers a huge market for children’s books. So China ought to be an important participant of the world children publication. In consideration of the translating difficulty, picture books would be a rather good choice for China to push forward the export of its children’s publications as they include less literary content. China holds a rich resource of good authors and stories, so China Children Press & Publication Group expects to cooperate with good illustrators all over the world and output good stories overseas through the illustrations which accord with international aesthetics better in order to improve the international awareness of the Chinese children publication in the international market.
Expand the Communication Channel and Improve the International Interaction
Zhang Mingzhou, Vice-Chairman and Executive Member of CBBY said that through years’ work experience of international interaction, he found that the world does need Chinese children’s books, while the channels for communication are lacked. “Just like China wants to understand the world, the world also wants to understand China and include China content in their publications. But they do not know which writer or work worth reading.” He suggested that copyright import or export should not be the only focus in cross-cultural interaction – it should be in a more comprehensive and profound way. For instance, International Children’s Books Reading Alliance has more than 70 national branches, and each branch consists of writers of Children's Literature, illustrators, professors and so forth. Magazine Book Bird of IBBY has recommend list, and Bologna Book Fair has set up the award of Children illustration. “It is quite meaningful to have writers and illustrators attend this kind of comparison activities. As long as you show up, with the mark of ‘China’, they will keep an eye on that and look at your things carefully.” Said Zhang Mingzhou, “me international academic journals also want to have more articles introducing authors, painters and publishing houses of Chinese children literature. They are unable to find suitable resources without our support. ”
A few lines of words in the memoir of Bennett Josef, founder of Random House are always on the mind of Li Xueqian: “The book items available of Random House are considerate. It will gain more than now even if it will close in the next 20 years - it is as easy as picking up gold in the pavement.” He hopes that Chinese children’s books can be exported to the whole world, so that the copyright trade will create more profits and replace traditional book selling, which can help transform Chinese publishers from "processors" into real "manufactures".
