By investigating the impurities in the rare earth materials and the microstructure of the alloy, the probable causes of the fluctuation in the performance of the AB5-type hydrogen storage alloy produced by an induction furnace are discussed. The properties of hydrogen storage alloys are determined by the composition, microstructure and surface state of the alloy. In addition to the influence of the cooling conditions during casting, the alloy performance fluctuation is also related to the impurities such as iron and magnesium in the rare earth raw materials and the smelting process factors (including factors such as unit output, melting temperature, time atmosphere and furnace frequency)
